East Midlands Airport has revealed its top five destinations which have seen a year on year increase in passenger numbers - and some may surprise you.

According to the airport, June saw 1,000 more passengers jet off on holiday than during the corresponding month in 2017.

Popular countries like Turkey, Spain and Greece feature in the list - however, some destinations are a little further off the beaten track.

We have listed the destinations that are growing in popularity below, and provided an insight into what they have to offer holidaymakers.

5. Almeria

Mediterranean coast, city of Calahonda, Province of Almeria, Spain

Overlooked by the Moorish fortress Alcazaba, Almeria is a former Arab city and harbour with heaps to offer culture and history buffs.

Sights include modern museums, ancient Cathedrals, and even an underground network of Civil War shelters.

A number of beaches can also be found along the coast, including the vast Playa de Aguadulce.

4. Antalya

The Temple of Apollo in Side Town of Antalya Province

Dubbed the fastest-growing city in Turkey by TripAdvisor, tourists from the East Midlands are flocking to Antalya.

Once a Roman port, major sights include Hadrian's Gate, built to honour the Roman emperor's visit, and a 13th century mosque.

You'll also find beaches, waterfalls and water parks for the perfect city break by the sea.

3. Corfu

Amazing view on Corfu island in Greece

Corfu Town has long been a popular holiday destination for Brits - but there's more to the Greek island than the beach bars of Kavos.

Villages like Palaiokastritsa (above) on the north-west of the island offer crystal-clear waters, historical sights and local tavernas which come alive at night.

A trip to the island wouldn't be complete without a shopping trip to Corfu Old Town, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

2. Seville

Spain Square in Parque de María Luisa

The capital of Spain's Andalusia region has quickly become a popular city break destination for people looking for alternatives to Barcelona or Madrid.

One of the best ways to see the Gothic backdrop of Seville is to take a horse-drawn carriage around to view the famous sights, like Plaza de Espana.

You can also enjoy a bustling food scene, with centuries-old tapas bars, fresh churros served from carts, and of course, Seville oranges.

1. Dalaman

Dalaman

Taking the top spot is Dalaman in Turkey.

Taking its name from the central town of the Dalaman district, it's become popular for its turquoise waters, mountainous terrain and historical sights.

From the Blue Lagoon in Olu Deniz to the nightlife of Bar Street in Marmaris, there really is something for everyone.
