A £30 million revamp is set to take place at Nottingham Castle over the next two years.

But before the castle shuts its gates to visitors, a week of free entry is being offered at the iconic tourist destination.

Visitors to Nottingham Castle will be free to take a look around the grounds this week, before work gets underway to make the castle a "world-class visitor destination".

This will include a new visitors centre, access to caves underneath the castle and a Robin Hood gallery, bringing to life the legends of the city's famous outlaw.

Heather Mayfield, chief executive of Nottingham Castle Trust, told Nottinghamshire Live: "It will give Nottingham a significant international destination in the heart of the city."

Entry to the castle will be free from Monday, June 25, to 5pm on Sunday, July 1, with a programme of free events and activities throughout the week to mark the milestone in the site’s history.

These include meeting the site’s historical characters including Robin Hood, archery, storytelling, and building a time capsule to celebrate the new development.

Part of the funding for the project has come from the D2N2 regional enterprise partnership, as well as from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Nottingham Castle Trust and Nottingham City Council.

Matthew Wheatley, D2N2 chief executive, said: "Nottingham has a varied and rich history.

"Nottingham Castle is a striking part of Nottingham’s skyline and this new and improved castle experience will help bring Nottingham’s history and heritage to life, attract even more visitors to the site, create jobs and improve the overall offer across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire."
