Two rush-hour crashes on the M1 caused long delays on the motorway in both directions.

The first accident was between a car and a van, according to traffic information company Inrix, which says the incident happened between Junction 23A and Junction 24 near East Midlands Airport on the northbound carriageway, with congestion to Junction 23 near Loughborough and on the A42.

The second crash happened on the southbound carriageway near Junction 25 for Derby.

All lanes on the M1 southbound are now open, according to traffic information service Inrix. It is reporting delays of 20 minutes on the southbound carriageway.

A spokesperson for traffic information company Inrix has said that thew Junction 23 incident involved a van which hit a car, causing it to spin around on its wheels.

One lane is currently blocked but recovery is taking place.

Leicestershire police were not called to Junction 23 accident

A spokesperson for Leicestershire police has confirmed they were not called out to the Junction 23 incident.

There are currently delays of an hour and a half on both sides of the motorway in the Derby area.

According to Google Maps, the traffic queue is 15 miles long due to the accidents.
