A naturist from Midway has said that sunbathers should be able to strip off in their own garden – but only if they are not overlooked by neighbours.

Stuart Haywood, of Elmsleigh Green, who made the news after renewing his wedding vows in the nude, calls himself a “dedicated practicing naturist” and believes that nudists should only sunbathe naked if their garden is not overlooked by anyone.

The 79-year-old spoke out after the Burton Mail published advice from police officers in Surrey who took action after a “neighbour dispute” broke out over the issue.

The law states it is not an offence to be naked in public, so sunbathing in the nude within the privacy of the garden is not illegal – but within certain conditions.

It can become an offence if someone has stripped off with the intention of causing distress, alarm or outrage.

Police advice is that those who do want an all-over tan should be "discreet" about their sunbathing habits.

Mr Haywood agrees, saying: “I am a dedicated practising naturist but I do not think it wise to strip off in your garden if the garden is overlooked or visible to members of the public going about their daily tasks.

"Why should I impose my naked body on good folk who do not share my beliefs? Do nothing to alienate your neighbours is the best plan.

“I do not like roasting in the sun for hours on end. I much prefer to walk in the countryside or garden. I find that the natural pace and rhythm of walking enhances the appreciation of the surrounding natural world.

"I can enjoy the benefits of naturism, which include topping up of vitamin D and an increase in self-confidence, not to mention the sensation of swinging along at a good gait and the sense of freedom it bestows.

“I am a regular visitor to Lakeside Farm, in Lincolnshire, (www.naturistholiday.co.uk) who cater for my particular requirements and has the advantage of being "clothes optional" thereby affording my wife, who is not a naturist but is not shocked by the sight of naked bodies, to accompany me.”
