Drivers who make phone calls while behind the wheel could be caught and fined using hi-tech safety cameras.

The Mirror reports that police in Norfolk are testing out a new system that detects a mobile phone signal coming from a car, reads the car’s number plate and then takes a photo as evidence the phone was being used by the driver.

At the moment the motorists being caught using the new cameras are only being sent warning letters but in the future cameras could be used to catch and fine motorists on their phones in the same that speeding motorists are being caught in their thousands every week at present.

Drivers can receive six penalty points and a £200 fine for using a phone while driving

Using your mobile phone while driving currently carries a punishment of six penalty points and a £200 fine.

The signs detect the signals emitted by mobile phones and have been developed by warning signs specialist Westcotec with the road safety team at Norfolk County Council.

If it proves successful in Norfolk, the phone-detecting road signs may be rolled out across the country.

"We will be using the information provided by Norfolk County Council's road safety team to help us target drivers in the future but the message is simple - leave your phone alone whilst you're behind the wheel," said Norfolk roads policing Inspector Jonathan Chapman.
