A children’s charity is urging anyone who may be concerned about a child's welfare to contact them, after evil mum Kathryn Smith had her sentence reduced by judges.

The NSPCC said Smith, 24, formerly of Overseal, consigned her daughter, Ayeeshia, to a "painful and brutal death" when she stamped on her so hard it caused her little heart to stop. The toddler had injuries that left her resembling a car crash victim, the original court hearing was told.

In the weeks leading up to her death, Ayeeshia had been mistreated, the court was told.

Smith's minimum jail tariff was reduced from 24 to 19 years at the same time her bid to have her conviction for murder quashed was dismissed by the panel of judges sitting in the Court of Appeal in London.

Now the NSPCC has said it is imperative that cases of child cruelty are reported.

It comes after Smith’s live-in boyfriend, Matthew Rigby, was convicted of allowing Ayeeshia’s death.

An NSPCC spokesman said: “Instead of protecting her defenceless young daughter from harm, Kathryn Smith consigned her to a painful and brutal death.

“It is hard to comprehend how a parent could commit such a horrific crime against their own flesh and blood.

“We urge anyone concerned about a child to call the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000 as it could save a life.

“Help for children and young people is available through Childline on 0800 1111.”
