Pupils at a Swadlincote secondary school were given a lesson in higher education by a professor and former student.

Professor Matt Jarvis, lecturer in Astrophysics at The University of Oxford and former Pingle Academy pupil, returned to the Coronation Street school to talk to pupils in Year 10.

Joined by Granville Sports College pupils Professor Jarvis said: "I’ve been to several universities so I can give the pupils a balanced view of higher education.

"My advice to the young people at Pingle and in Swadlincote would be to enjoy yourself. Don’t feel bad about being good at something, instead make the most of whatever talent you have.

"If you have confidence in yourself then it doesn’t really matter that you might not know what career to pursue. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was a pupil at Pingle but I knew I liked physics. I didn’t really know my job existed. The world of work will certainly change in the future so learn to take opportunities."

Of the event, Year 10 pupil Vlad Zimelis said: "It was good to have a professor in, especially with him once being a pupil here. If he can do well then there is no reason why we can’t do well too."
