A major road in Derbyshire has been closed after a crash involving a car and a lorry.

Derbyshire Constabulary has confirmed that a woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The crash, which happened at around 3pm today, Wednesday, December 13, has seen the road closed on the A38 Kingsway southbound between the A52 Markeaton Island and the A5111 Little Eaton Island.

A spokesman from the force said: "We had a call at around 3.10pm to a collision between a lorry and a car.

"A woman has been taken to Queen's Medical Centre with serious injuries."

Major delays are to be expected and the spokesman added that there was likely to be an extended closure. They added, if this was the case, diversion signs would be put up for motorisits.

A spokesman from East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 3.05pm on December 13 to Queensway in Derby. The caller reported that there had been a road traffic collision between a car and a lorry.

"We sent two paramedics in ambulance cars, two crewed ambulances and the air ambulance, and one patient with serious injuries was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham by land ambulance."

There is stationary traffic between Little Eaton and Mickleover. Emergency services are currently on the scene.

Congestion on the northbound stretches back to Toyota Island from Markeaton Island.

On the southbound, the queues are backed up past Little Eaton roundabout.

Traffic is gridlocked in Derby due to the crash on the A38 as rush hour comes into full swing.

Motorists are using alternative routes in a bid to avoid the road closure.

One casualty has been taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham with “serious injuries”, East Midlands Ambulance Service said.

No vehicles are on fire

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that no vehicles are on fire.

A spokesman said nobody was trapped in their vehicle and the driver of the car is being assessed by paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service.
