Shock images show the thousands of pounds worth of damage caused after a car reversed into a wall near Melbourne Assembly Rooms.

Luckily, the driver of the Toyota Yaris was not injured, although a bit shaken, after accidentally reversing her vehicle into a boundary wall of the assembly rooms' car park, off High Street, today, Tuesday, August 8.

The damage has meant a footpath and a play area have been temporarily closed until the wall is repaired or replaced.

Shocking images have captured the damage caused

Assembly rooms manager Andy Heafield, who took the photographs, said the woman, who was due to attend a pilates class at the assembly rooms this morning was helped from her vehicle by members of her class who later gave her a lift home.

South Derbyshire District Council has also attended the scene to assess the safety of the structure.

Mr Heafield said: "It happened about 9.30am. I was in the assembly rooms at the time and someone came in to say someone has reversed into the wall.

The driver of car was not injured but shaken up

"Helpfully she was attending a pilates class here so some of her class came out to her and took her home.

"The first thing we did is get the woman out of the car as she was stuck in the front, so had to climb into the back seat and out the back doors.

"We had the council officials take a look at it and the car has been towed away.

"It was an automatic car. She was okay, but was a bit shaken.

It is not clear if the wall is safety leading to a footpath and children's play area being closed

"The footpath from the high street to the doctor’s surgery has had to be closed off as well as the children’s playground in Lothian Gardens. They can still access this through our car park though."

Mr Heafield said he has no idea how much the clean-up and wall replacement would cost but expects it will be into the thousands.

He said it was a good case of the community pulling together, saying: "Rob from the cemetery, Bammy the street cleaner and Councillor Sheila Hicklin, from Melbourne Parish Council, all helped with sealing off the area, moving traffic and looking after the driver."
