A councillor is to stand trial after denying a charge that he assaulted a woman.

Conservative councillor Robert Coe, who represents the Swadlincote ward on South Derbyshire District Council, has denied assaulting a woman during an alleged incident last year.

Councillor Coe, 60, of Hartshill Road, Hartshorne, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court to deny a charge of assault which is said to have occurred on November 2, last year.

Wearing a suit, he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, and to enter his plea to the charge.

Magistrates were told by the court clerk that his trial will be heard at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on June 14.

He was granted unconditional bail until he next appears in court in Nottingham.

He has been a district councillor for three years, after being elected in May 2015.
