Swadlincote's most loved swans have been parading their new-born cygnets around Midway Ponds - much to the joy of onlookers and passers-by.

The group of swans were spotted showing off their adorable infants last weekend while South Derbyshire families were out enjoying the sunshine.

The happy news comes after animal lovers in the area were sadly left heartbroken after one cygnet was killed by an impatient driver.

The family have won the hearts of those living in South Derbyshire, gaining fame on social media as local residents shared photos and stories about the swan family online.

The tragic incident occurred in July last year when the swans were crossing Midway Road.

It is believed when the swans and their cygnets were seen crossing the road, cars slowed down and waited for them to pass, but another impatient driver decided to overtake the other cars, tragically hitting one cygnet in the process.

Swadlincote resident Mary Chamberlain had been keeping a close eye on the swans and was there when the devastating incident took place.

She said: "My husband had to carry the dead cygnet out of the road because mum wouldn't leave it and her other two babies including herself were in danger because traffic was going around them.

"But the swans are doing well and thriving at the minute. I still check and feed them daily along with the ducks and ducklings.

"I am rather passionate about the ducks and swans in the pond, especially this time of year when there are more people about and traffic is heavy.

"We are honoured to live near such a beautiful place."
