Travellers who pitched up on lawns in front of a popular luxury hotel near Burton have now left the site. The group set up camp outside the Hotel Mercure Burton upon Trent Newton Park, in Newton Road, Newton Solney, after arriving at around 8pm on Wednesday, August 16.

At the time, hotel duty manager Susan Holway explained that their operator, Jupiter Hotels, knew that the travellers were on the grass verge at the front of the hotel.

She said: "Jupiter Hotels are aware of the recent incident. This is currently being investigated and we will be able to provide more information in due course."

A spokesman from the hotel confirmed that the travellers moved off the site on Thursday, August 17, leaving of their own accord. An inspector from Derbyshire Police also confirmed that the travellers were no longer at the site and had moved elsewhere.

The hotel remained open throughout the travellers' stay, and no guests were affected by their presence, according to the hotel.

Eye witnesses said that they saw travellers speaking with police when they first arrived outside the hotel.

It was also reported to the Burton Mail by another eyewitness that two caravans had pulled up with a fold-up chair and a table. Some of the travellers were seen sitting on the chairs.

This isn't the first time that travellers have pitched up in Burton this month

This is the second time this month that travellers have been spotted near Burton. Earlier in the month, on Wednesday, August 2, a group of travellers moved on to the car park at Branston Golf and Country Club, Burton Road, Branston.

The group arrived at the site and parked two caravans in the car park, but were told by the club that they were going to issue them with a court order forcing them to move on.

Staff at the venue used a digger to block off the entrance to prevent any other caravans from entering the site.

Later that evening the travellers blocked the entrance to the car park, stopping anyone from entering or leaving the club's grounds.

Dozens of people were left in their cars for up to 30 minutes as they waited for police to arrive at the scene.
