Shocking video footage has been passed on to the Burton Mail showing a young girl dicing with death as she runs out in front of cars using the busy South Derbyshire roundabout - as her friends laugh as the youngster narrowly avoids being hit.

Driver Kuromi Jenkins had been stuck in traffic approaching the Tollgate Island, in Woodville, travelling from Burton, but was moving when a young girl ran out into the road narrowly missing her car.

She said the girl could have been killed if Ms Jenkins' mother, sitting in the car with her, had not shouted that the youngster was there.

The video also shows two other girls apparently laughing at motorists following the young schoolgirl's dash.

Ms Jenkins has released the dashcam footage she took to the Burton Mail in an attempt to warn others that if they try the same stunt it could end in tragedy.

She said: “Please will you publish this video in a bid to promote road safety. This was at the Tollgate Island, in Woodville, which is a highly busy and dangerous island. The two girls that are with the girl were laughing and thought this [what the girl did] was highly amusing.

“She took me by surprise as she ran out behind a van so I didn't see her. Luckily my mother was with me who spotted her and shouted to me, so as I went to accelerate, she alerted me and I braked instead otherwise this could have been a whole other story.
“What I can't get my head around is I hadn't stopped moving. The traffic was still flowing when she chose to run in front of me rather than waiting or crossing at a safer point.”

Tollgate Island has been the scene of many crashes and near-misses over the year as an increase in nearby housing developments has led to a massive traffic build-up, creating chaos and headaches for the motorists attempting to navigate the island.
