Work to repair a Barton under Needwood island that has been dubbed one of the most pothole riddled in the UK, is expected to start next month it has been revealed.

Staffordshire County Council has promised to pump £500,000 into improving the island at the A38 junction at Barton Turns and it has now been scheduled to start on August 7.

The Burton Mail previously revealed in February that Highways bosses were set to finally invest the cash to improve the island, described by one motorist as being like “the surface of the moon”.

The repairs are expected to take around three to four weeks to complete with an estimated end-date of September 1, and the road will be closed throughout.

Some temporary closures of the A38 slip roads will be put in place while the work is carried out.

The council added that one of the reasons that it will be done in the summer is because it requires dry weather, But signs will be displayed shortly advising motorists about the work.

The junction is frequently used by HGV's serving the nearby Graycar and Barton business parks and it is expected that the resurfacing will help prolong the life of the road.

Drivers who regularly use the road have been vocal about the potholes and the poor condition of the road has even made the national headlines, featuring on the BBC's Breakfast Show and in national newspapers.
