Motorists heading in and out of Burton were caught up in traffic chaos this morning after two separate crashes caused severe delays.

A man and a woman, who were driving in separate vehicles, both suffered minor injuries after a collision on the A50 between the Toyota roundabout and Swarkestone Road.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were all called to the scene to deal with the incident, which left one lane of the main route closed to motorists. It involved a Mini Cooper and a Volkswagen Golf.

Delays of up to an hour and a half were reported by drivers on the eastbound carriageway. It also affected the A38 as many people opted for a different route to avoid the tailbacks.

A driver who passed the scene said: "Thankfully both drivers looked all right as they were exchanging details.

"One of them was standing by the side of the road and was on the phone, perhaps arranging to get the lorry recovered or reporting it. The white truck was damaged at the front.
