Drivers on the M1 have been left at a standstill after a crash between a car and a lorry earlier this morning.

Leicestershire Police received a call at 9.47am to reports of a collision between a car and a lorry on the southbound carriage of the motorway between junction 24 for East Midlands Airport and junction 23A.

All lanes have now been re-opened, but delays of 60 minutes have been predicted by Highways England.

Police say that all three lanes of the road had previously been closed while emergency services deal with the incident, which has resulted in traffic being at a standstill.

The collision happened in an area already affected by roadworks, as a scheme to introduce a smart motorways system is underway.

Ambulance crews are also on the scene, although it is not yet known if anybody has been injured.
