Police are asking parents to be vigilant after man asked a 10-year-old schoolgirl to get in his car in Stanton.

The incident is reported to have happened at around 3.20pm, on Wednesday, June 6, when the girl was walking home from school along Piddocks Road, Stanton.

The Stanton Primary School pupil was walking a short distance to meet her mum when she said a man driving a smallish silver car trapped her between a bush and his vehicle and asked her to get in.

The girl then managed to squeeze between the car and the bush and ran to her mum and told her what had happened.

Inspector Kate Bateman, who is in charge of policing in South Derbyshire, said: "Such reports are very rare. The young girl was clearly upset about something and we are investigating.

"My officers are attending the school today to speak further with the girl and other students and will be working with the school to send advice out to parents.

"We will have additional patrols in the area over the next few school days.

"We would always encourage parents and children to walk to and from school. If children are walking on their own it is always a good idea to have points on their route where they feel safe to go if they should become worried.

"In this case the mum was only a very short distance away and was there to comfort her daughter."

If anyone was in this area at this time yesterday and saw anything suspicious or has dash-cam footage officers have asked them to make contact on 101 quoting reference number 593 6/6/18.
