Thousands of Fortnite players have been scammed by online websites claiming to offer cheap deals on in-game currency.

The smash-hit battle royale video game exploded in popularity in the past few months, but that also has drawn scammers to try and exploit players, reports the Mirror.

Now a warning has been sent out to players not to fall victim.

The free-to-play game offers optional microtransactions where you can exchange your money for in-game currency V-Bucks.

Players can then exchange V-Bucks for cosmetic upgrades and weapon upgrades in the game.

The scammers are offering players discounted in-game currency.

Scammers have been using online websites offering discounted V-Bucks to steal personal information and money from unsuspecting players.

Now, creator of Fortnite, Epic Games, has issued a warning to its players, reminding them to keep an eye out for scams.

It warns about "scam sites" that offer free or discounted V-Bucks.

Even though the game is free to download, players spent $296 million on V-Bucks in April.

"Beware of scam sites offering things like free or discounted V-Bucks," wrote Epic Games in an email to players.

"The only official websites for Fortnite are epicgames.com and fortnite.com."

"Unless you are logging in, Epic will never ask for your password or any other account information.”

Fortnite players have been getting scammed online.

Although Fortnite is already available on Xbox One and PS4, the game has really been popular on mobile.

But scammers are also trying to dupe players this way as well.

Several fake versions of Fortnite for Android are being advertised online.

Android Police discovered the Fortnite Android scams during simple Google Searches, as well as on YouTube.

The game has also recently been released for Nintendo Switch.

Fortnite has just been released for the Nintendo Switch console.

The site explained: “Most of them can be easily spotted from their broken English and generally crappy web design, but it wouldn't be difficult for anyone who isn't a complete idiot to make something more convincing.”

Fortnite recently introduced its fourth season and had a successful crossover event with Avengers: Infinity War.
