Children from Uttoxeter's primary schools have been honing their horticultural skills by planting scores of shrubs at the town's main park.

A total of around 150 youngsters were hosted by Uttoxeter Town Council representatives as they took the first steps towards learning how to plant and grow flowers.

They had been given seeds to grow their own plants before the event and were proud to bring them along put them in planters around Bramshall Road Park.

And the entertainment even extended to a visit by a special guest magician, who performed a show for the four-and-five-year-old pupils at the end of the day.

Town mayor Alison Trenery said: "It was wonderful to see the children so interested and engaged with learning about nature.

"They'd all done so well nurturing their flowers before the event and they look lovely in the planters around the park, which East Staffordshire Borough Council had kindly put up for them.

"This event's now been running for about 15 years and it's partly to engage them with nature, teach them how to grow things and encourage them to develop an interest in the outdoors.

"We want them to make use of the park, which is an absolutely wonderful facility for the town to have - the borough council does a fantastic job of maintaining it.

"So we hope they bring their parents back to show them the work they've done."

Among the volunteers who helped make the plant-out happen were those from the Friends of Bramshall Road Park and Uttoxeter Station Adopters groups.

It is hoped the plant-out will work in favour of Uttoxeter's In Bloom competition entries - the town won a prestigious Silver Gilt at the national stage last year.

Councillor Trenery said: "The volunteers have done a fantastic job and were so instructive and helpful with the children.

"We all enjoyed meeting the children. I had a particularly enjoyable conversation with a group of girls about what a mayor does and more about the mayoral chains.

"It's great to see the young children of Uttoxeter see eager to learn about everything around them."
