Nigel Clough has given fans an update on where Burton are at in their search for a new goalkeeper.

Stephen Bywater and Harry Campbell are currently the only first-team keepers in the Albion squad after Jon McLaughlin's departure upon the expiry of his contract last month.

Bywater is the only one of that duo with senior appearances to his name for Burton and, as it stands, will go into next term as the Brewers' starting number one.

Academy keeper Callum Hawkins came off the bench in Wednesday's 5-0 defeat of Kidsgrove Athletic, after Sam Hornby's departure to Port Vale earlier in the summer.

"We are still making enquiries about goalkeepers," Clough said after Friday night's 4-0 win over Mickleover Sports.

"We've got a couple on the go at the moment, we've been knocked back with a couple."

It was revealed today that McLaughlin is currently on trial with Albion's Championship rivals Hull City - with current 'keeper Eldin Jakupovic set to seal an £2 million switch to Leicester City in the coming days, according to reports.

McLaughlin - who spent the past three seasons with the Brewers - has joined up with the Tigers in Portugal as part of their pre-season preparations.

Clough has also offered an injury update on Jake Buxton and Marvin Sordell - who both returned to pre-season with existing ailments.

They are yet to feature in Albion's friendly run - but both could be back before the week is out.

"Marvin is going to train on Monday with a view to playing a little bit on Tuesday at Solihull," added Clough.

"And Jake, we are probably looking at a week's time - maybe at Matlock Town."

Burton's on-loan midfielder Luke Murphy is keen to make sure the Brewers' survival mission is achieved with more than one game to go this time around.

It took Albion until the penultimate day to secure their Championship status for another season last term - and that was a bit too close for comfort as far as Murphy is concerned.

"The first aim is to stay in the league, but looking back at last season, there were games where we lost in the 90th minute and we felt like we could have come away with a point," he said.

"And, looking back at the end of the season, the table looked a lot tighter than what it actually felt like."

Brewers academy under-18 manager Sam Rose reckons that Friday's loss to Liverpool was a good chance to showcase what the academy is all about in front of the might of Steven Gerrard's imperious Reds side.

Gerrard was making his managerial debut at St George's Park, but Rose was keen to stress from the outset that he wanted his players to play the game and not the occasion - and he feels that was achieved.

"It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved and it was a good chance to showcase how far the academy has come", he told the club website after the Liverpool loss.

"It is a difficult result to take for everyone involved. The players are particularly disappointed, but we created a number of chances and played some good football, at times, against one of the best academies in the country, if not in Europe."

Elsewhere in the land of the Brewers, Marcus Harness is set to complete his loan move to Port Vale this week, and former Albion striker Shaun Harrad has signed for Matlock Town, and could face his former club in Saturday's friendly at Causeway Lane.
