Nigel Clough has said Burton Albion are looking to bring in another forward for the new Championship season.

The Brewers are currently staying in Southampton on a team-building trip ahead of Friday's friendly against AFC Wimbledon - and Clough has been speaking to SportMail about his efforts to sign new players, and offered an update on injuries and potential target John Brayford.

"There's a possibility of a wide player and a forward," he said , when asked about who could be the Brewers' seventh signing of the summer.

"But we certainly need another forward. We will go ahead and pursue some enquiries with forwards that we've already asked about and see where we get.

"We made an enquiry for John Brayford that didn't go anywhere, so we're probably going to get a right-back in."

Asked whether that meant a move for Brayford was probably off the cards for now, he said: "As far as we are concerned, for the moment, yes."

Clough also offered an injury update after Luke Varney limped off in Tuesday night's 2-1 victory over Solihull Moors - and explained why Jake Buxton has yet to make an appearance for the Brewers after his return to the club.

With Jake, if he does all right this week, he'll be working with Nick (physio Nick Fenton) and then we'll train on Friday morning and he might get 15 minutes on Friday night," said Clough .

"But we are not banking on that. Maybe it'll be 45 minutes at Matlock on Saturday."

"Luke Varney getting a slight niggle on Tuesday night was the first one (injury) - and he's one of the fittest, ironically."

Burton Albion's latest arrival has lifted the lid on just what Brewers fans can expect from him following his signing on Tuesday.

Hope Akpan became Burton's sixth signing of a busy summer when he put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal following his release from relegated Blackburn Rovers earlier this week, and he wants Albion fans to know what he is all about.

"Just energy, box-to-box," said Akpan, when asked what sort of player Brewers fans can expect to see next term.

"I like contact, I like making tackles, to keep it simple, (and to) keep the ball moving.

"I like (making) late runs into the box as well", he added.

Cork City defender Alan Bennett has tipped his on-loan centre-back partner Ryan Delaney for Championship or even Premier League success over the course of his career.

"Ryan’s been fantastic, he’s getting better and better, he’s going to keep progressing, which is great.," Bennett told the Irish Sun.

“The sky is the limit really because in centre-half terms, he’s only 20, so he’s not going to hit his prime for about ten years.

“He could be anywhere - a high Championship or Premier League player. He’s got a really good attitude, which is the most important thing."
