Burton Albion winger Marcus Harness was straight into the Port Vale team for last night's 1-0 friendly defeat to Derby County.

Harness made his first appearance for the Valiants within hours of completing a season-long loan move to Vale Park from the Brewers, who have a recall clause in January.

The Albion academy graduate played for more than hour as Michael Brown's side were sunk by a 51st-minute Darren Bent penalty.

Brown was reportedly "pleased" with Harness' first showing in a Vale shirt, before being replaced by fellow youngster Mike Calveley after 62 minutes.

The move to the League Two Valiants is the third loan spell of Harness' career, following stints at Ilkeston FC and Aldershot Town in 2015/16.

It provides the pacy wideman - who started Albion's first two pre-season friendlies as a left-wing-back - with a real opportunity to gain further EFL experience in League Two, while also attemtping to secure a sustained run in the first team, something that has so far eluded him at the Pirelli Stadium.

Speaking ahead of Harness' loan move, Nigel Clough said the Vale move could allow his player "to get the first-team games that he needs to kick on".

Former Brewers keeper Sam Hornby - another product of the Burton academy - started in goal for Port Vale following his summer move from Albion.
