Burton Albion beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 today to ensure their relegation battle goes to the final game of the season at Preston North End next Sunday.

Hope Akpan's first goal for the Brewers and Lucas Akins' strike ensured the match was over by half-time, with Bolton rarely threatening Stephen Bywater's goal.

Nigel Clough's side couldn't move out of the drop-zone for the first time since December, though, because of Barnsley's 2-0 defeat of Brentford.

Birmingham City and Reading were both defeated by Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town respectively on a thrilling day of Championship action that means five teams are in contention for the two remaining relegation spots.

Phil Parkinson's thoughts on today's game...

I thought we started OK, it was pretty even up to the goal and we had some good moments ourselves. But the two goals we conceded were soft goals. Burton grew 10 foot tall after that. They were first to every ball. They were more physical than us and they did all the horrible things in football better than us. And the goal has knocked the stuffing out of us and I’m hugely disappointed in the performance today.

Nigel Clough is here...

It would have been nice to be out of the bottom three. Of course you only have to be out of it for the last day. We need a result, and they need one as well. He (Hope Akpan) was very good today. He showed a very good all-round performance.
