Welcome to SportMail's live coverage of Burton Albion v Cardiff City on the opening day of the 2017/18 Championship season at the Pirelli Stadium.

Can the Brewers follow up Tuesday night's 2-1 pre-season win over former Premier League champions Leicester City with another impressive win against a Neil Warnock side Nigel Clough has tipped for promotion?

Albion will be hoping for an opening-day victory after last season's thrilling 4-3 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Today, the talking stops and all the hard work Clough and his staff have been busy with on the training ground over the summer is finally going to be put into practice.

The manager's view

If any side was going to win that game in the second half, it looked to be Cardiff City - and they got their rewards in the dying minutes.

But Nigel Clough knows it might have been very different if Albion’s first-half quality had told.

Here’s what the Brewers’ boss made of his side’s first outing of 2017/18...

Neil Warnock reckons the Brewers aren't the dead certs for relegation everyone thinks they are

I know anything’s possible in this league - anybody can beat anybody - and I tell you now, teams won’t fancy coming here in a million years.

We’ve got bags of effort, bags of endeavor and honesty as always, but sometimes you need that little bit of quality that wins you the game.

Here's how all the action unfolded

Lucas Akins didn't see much of the ball - was that part of the reason the Brewers lost today?

Despite the late goal, it doesn't seem to be affecting Albion fans

Full-time! Brewers 0-1 Cardiff

A sucker punch is the only way to describe that.

A late Kenneth Zohore goal proved to be the difference between the two sides in the end after 87 minutes of football.

Ultimately, the Brewers didn’t do enough in the final third, and gave a man with 12 goals to his name last term a chance to punish them.

Full match reaction still to come, including the verdict on an opening-day defeat for the Brewers.

Kenneth Zohore lashes one into the bottom left-hand corner past Bywater from the edge of the box.

Murphy should have put a foot in there.

Cardiff looking dangerous every time they come forward now.

84: Nice little spell in the Cardiff half for the Brewers

They could have had a foul there, too.

82: Mendez-Laing takes it on himself

When he really should have crossed it back. Great work by the two substitutes Damour and Mendez-Laing to create that opening.

But it sails straight through the box and out for a goal-kick.
