Former Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett looks set to become the new Stoke City boss.

Rowett, currently in charge at Derby County, became the Potters' top target for the job following Paul Lambert's departure earlier this month.

And Derby confirmed yesterday evening (Monday) that Rowett had asked for permission to speak to newly-relegated Stoke, who will compete with the Rams in the Championship next season.

He is currently the overwhelming favourite with the bookmakers - at 1/20 with SkyBet - to take the job at the Bet365 Stadium, and some reports are suggesting he could be appointed as early as today.

Rowett has been Derby manager for 14 months, joining in March 2017, three months after his shock sacking by Birmingham City.

He had originally taken over as Blues boss in October 2014 following a successful stint with the Brewers in his first managerial job.

He got Albion to the League Two play-off semi-finals in 2013 and then the Wembley final a year later, before Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took over two-and-a-half months into the 2014-15 campaign and helped lead them to the fourth-tier title.
