Joe Sbarra and Ben Fox both make their first competitive starts for Burton Albion as the Brewers begin their Carabao Cup campaign at League One Oldham Athletic.

Eighteen-year-old Sbarra - a late substitute in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City - starts in a three-man midfield alongside Hope Akpan and former Latics loanee Matt Palmer, while Fox is on the left of an attacking trio that is spearheaded by Luke Varney, with Lucas Akins on the right.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Connor Ripley makes his Albion debut as expected, against the side for whom he equalled the club's clean sheet record last term.

He plays behind a back four of John Mousinho, Tom Naylor, Kyle McFadzean and Damien McCrory - with Nigel Clough making no fewer than eight changes from the weekend's opener against the Bluebirds.

Six players who started against Cardiff are on the bench at Boundary Park.

Stephen Warnock, Jake Buxton, Luke Murphy, Matty Lund, Jackson Irvine and Marvin Sordell are all among the substitutes, as is Harry Campbell.
