Burton Albion return to Championship action after the international break with a trip to face Leeds United tomorrow (3pm).

Thomas Christiansen's Whites sit third in the table ahead of the clash and are one of only two sides still unbeaten in the league at this stage, having begun their campaign in fine fashion.

Ahead of the game, we spoke to Radio Yorkshire's Tom Carnduff about new faces settling in, play-off ambitions and what Leeds learned against Burton last time out.

HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen celebrates his side's win at Sunderland

Garry Monk led Leeds to within five points and a single place of the Championship play-offs last season.

In the process, he saw them secure their biggest second-tier points tally - 75 - since 2006.

But within a month of the campaign finishing, he had resigned.

The man to replace him? Former Apoel Nicosia manager and Barcelona forward Thomas Christiansen.

Unsurprisingly, the Spaniard's arrival was followed by a plethora of new signings, as he went about moulding his own side at Elland Road.

Any questions about whether a new head coach and a group of players fresh to the Championship would take time to adapt to such an unforgiving division were answered in an unbeaten August.

"I think a lot of fans were unsure what to expect with Christiansen when the appointment was made," said Carnduff.

"His CV looked good enough with his record in Cyprus and the Europa League - but then so did Darko Milanic's!

"However, this side is playing an attacking and entertaining brand of football, and getting results as well.

"The new signings have settled in a lot quicker than most probably expected.

"Samuel Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski have emerged as early fan favourites after their performances in the opening games.

"Then Vurnon Anita's experiences with Newcastle United last season could be key for Leeds throughout this campaign."

LEEDS FANS HOPING FOR PLAY-OFFS - AT LEAST?

Leeds United celebrate on their way to a 2-0 victory at Sunderland

With Leeds having produced a long-awaited genuine play-off tilt last term, hopes were always going to be high among Whites fans this season.

Even with Monk departing and a new boss coming in, the quality they showed for long spells in 2016/17 suggested they must be part of the pre-season promotion talk this time around.

Eleven points from their first five league games - including fine 2-0 away wins at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest - have only backed up that case for United.

And with a deeper squad and their best start in the second tier since 1984 under the belt, could Christiansen's men be aiming even higher?

"A top-six finish will be the minimum expectation for the majority this season, with belief of a top-two place creeping into the ambition based on the early look of this side," added Carnduff.

"A summer of change has largely contributed to that, with new owner Andrea Radrizzani making a lot of positive moves off the pitch to help the team on it.

"He has publicly said that he wants a play-off finish this season, and the team looks capable of doing it. The difference this season is squad depth."

LESSON LEARNED AGAINST THE BREWERS?

Michael Kightly is mobbed by his Burton Albion teammates as he scores against Leeds United

Albion dealt a telling late-season blow to Leeds' play-off hopes last season.

Goals from Marvin Sordell and Michael Kightly secured a 2-1 victory for Burton over Monk's men at the Pirelli Stadium in April.

It was a huge result for the Brewers, and one that pretty much confirmed the Whites' place in the Championship for another season.

"I believe they will have learned a lot from the end of last season, including the result against Burton," said Carnduff.

"Leeds had quite a young group of players who seemed to be winning most weeks, so the result against Burton and conclusion of the campaign will help their experience of the Championship in the long run.

"Christiansen prepared a presentation at his interview for the head coach job where he outlined where Leeds went wrong under Monk, and the Burton game would have featured in that.

"So you'd imagine he's done his homework on Nigel Clough's men."

DANGER MAN

Samuel Saiz in action for Leeds United

"There have been a number of players that have caught the eye this season, but Samuel Saiz has been a key player and a joy to watch.

"It's clear to see why Leeds faced competition to bring him to the club this summer.

"He's a confident player with the ball at his feet and can contribute with both goals and assists.

"He's been playing in an attacking midfield role behind the striker throughout August, and you'd expect the same again on Saturday."

PHYSIO ROOM

Defensive duo Matt Pennington and Gaetano Berardi have recently returned to training from injury, so are doubtful to start against Burton.

Striker Caleb Ekuban is set to miss a couple of months with a foot injury, while new forward signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga's wife is due to give birth this weekend, so his inclusion is uncertain.
