Burton Albion goalkeeper Stephen Bywater is backing manager Nigel Clough to bring in the signings to help boost the Brewers' start to the new Championship season.

The Brewers lost their third league game on the bounce at the expense of Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, with Britt Assombalonga's classy double the difference at the Riverside.

Burton had spells of possession and pressure but, as has been the case for much of Albion's early-season league form, lacked any real cutting edge and dynamism up front.

Lucas Akins ran himself into the ground again in his fourth consecutive start, but the Brewers - Luke Varney's cameos off the bench so far apart - do not have an out-and-out starting forward in their ranks who can pull defences apart when fellow striker Marvin Sordell is stationed on the right-wing, with record signing Liam Boyce ruled out for the majority of the season through injury.

That could change, though, with Albion pushing for more new signings as Clough looks to strengthen his squad.

The Brewers boss confirmed on Tuesday night that they are pursuing a deal to bring Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow back to the Pirelli Stadium.

Enquiries are in for several other players as well as the August 31 deadline moves ever nearer.

Given Albion were without Liam Boyce, John Mousinho, Stephen Warnock (all injured), Jackson Irvine and Ben Turner (both suspended) at the Riverside - and with midfielder Hope Akpan set for a three-match suspension after being sent off against Boro - it is clear to see why reinforcements are needed.

And Bywater believes Clough will again prove his quality in the transfer market in the coming weeks - and his team are completely behind him with that.

"I think the gaffer did it last year and he'll do it this year," Bywater said post-match.

"He’ll do it again - he did it at Sheffield United.

"He'll get players in who will do really well and I trust the manager to do that.

Stephen Bywater punches clear

"We'll get players that we need and he'll pick the team that plays and we'll do well.

"Every single lad trusts him 100 per cent - we're with him and we enjoy going in and training and when we train, we train hard.

"When we play, we give 100 per cent for the club and that’s the mentality we've got at Burton.

"We've not got any individuals - we're a team, and it's the same (mentality) as last year."

In terms of Tuesday night's defeat, Bywater could not shoulder any blame for either goal - and he actually made a very good save from Rudy Gestede for Assombalonga's second, only for a static Brewers defence to watch the striker react quickest.

The keeper faces competition of his own, with new loan signing Connor Ripley breathing down his neck for a starting role.

So how is the experienced stopper finding the new three-man goalkeeping department in Burton's first-team?

"I love it, I enjoy it - (goalkeeping coach) Martin Taylor gives us a brilliant pre-season," he added.

"We're all sharp, we're all ready to play whenever we're called upon.

"The manager picks the team and we're a good unit, the goalkeeping department."
