Barnsley's defeat to Nottingham Forest last night has big implications for those fighting it out at the bottom of the Championship.

The Tykes lost their game in hand over Burton Albion and Bolton Wanderers 3-0, with Aitor Karanka's Reds swatting them aside with goals from Lee Tomlin, Ben Brereton and Apostolos Vellios.

That result now means Jose Morais' side are level with the Brewers on 38 points, but by virtue of a better goal difference they sit in 22nd place.

They could have climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since March with a win, but passed up a chance to move above 21st-placed Bolton.

And with play-off chasers Brentford and Derby County to come in their final two matches, it's looking bleak for Barnsley.

Crucially for the Brewers, though, that means the gap to Bolton, Saturday's opponents, and safety remains at two points while Birmingham and Reading still sit five points clear of the drop zone.

Forest could still help Albion even more, with Nigel Clough's old side still to play Bolton - on the final day of the season.

"It certainly helps - and that's your only fear, when teams technically haven't got anything to play for," Clough said of the possibility of the club he scored 131 goals for helping him and Albion out.

"But I think the manager at Forest will be demanding of them until the end of the season.

"So I think there's a lot of players playing for their futures and places for next season.

"We're great believers that if you finish the season well, then it does carry over into the season after.

"And if they go on a little bit of an unbeaten run of three games, it puts them in good heart going into the summer.

"And season tickets as well, people want a feel good factor at the end of the season - and they're more likely to buy season tickets.

"So there's all sorts of factors involved as to why you want a good end to the season."
