Nigel Clough says Burton Albion are looking to bring in another forward for the new Championship season.

The Brewers boss also confirmed that trialist Matty Fryatt has moved on from Albion for now after featuring in their first three pre-season friendlies of the summer.

Clough has already brought one new striker to the Pirelli Stadium ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, with Northern Ireland international Liam Boyce joining on a club-record fee from Ross County after finishing top of the Scottish Premiership goalscoring charts last term.

Marvin Sordell and Luke Varney are the Brewers' other out-and-out senior striking options, while Lucas Akins has also featured up front for Albion in the past and academy graduate Marcus Dinanga impressed out on loan at Matlock Town last summer.

Ex-Nottingham Forest front-man Fryatt had been training with Albion as he returned to fitness following a long-standing Achilles injury.

He played 45 minutes in each of the friendly wins over Kidsgrove Athletic, Mickleover Sports and Solihull Moors, firing a fine effort against the bar in his most recent outing.

But Clough expects Fryatt - who has "gone somewhere else this week" - to have other options in the near future.

And the Brewers boss says there are other forward options they are currently pursuing as pre-season continues.

"There's a possibility of a wide player and a forward," he said.

Matty Fryatt in pre-season action for Burton Albion

"Obviously Matty Fryatt has had a couple of games on trial - he has gone somewhere else now this week.

"So we are not quite sure, we'll just have to wait and see what happens with that one.

"But we certainly need another forward. We will go ahead and pursue some enquiries with forwards that we've already asked about and see where we get.

"I don't think we can depend and wait on if Matty is coming to us. He'll get other options and other offers probably, possibly better than us."

As for further back, Clough says there is also a chance they will bring a new right-back in for August - but that looks unlikely to be former Brewer John Brayford at this stage.

The ex-Derby County man - who spent last term on loan at the Pirelli and enjoyed a superb campaign - has been made available for transfer by Sheffield United.

But despite the Brewers being interested, Clough says their enquiries have not progressed.

"I think a right-back (could be signed), with Tom Flanagan turning down his contract in the end," he added.

"We made an enquiry for John Brayford that didn't go anywhere, so we're probably going to get a right-back in."

Asked whether that meant a move for Brayford was probably off the cards for now, he said: "As far as we are concerned, for the moment, yes."
