Burton Albion will not be re-signing Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow this summer - but they are getting closer to two new loan deals

England under-21 international Woodrow had been a target for the Brewers for the 2017/18 season after impressing for them on loan in the second half of last term.

He scored five goals in 14 appearances in that time - firing Albion to Championship survival in the process.

But having previously confirmed that enquiries had been made with Fulham about a possible return to the Pirelli for Woodrow, Nigel Clough said today that the striker will now be moving to another club, understood to be in the Championship.

"Cauley is going elsewhere," he said.

"I think it's with a possible permanent at the end of the season - so Fulham would prefer him to go there," he said.

"We understand that and we move on to the next targets.

"There were a couple of deals that Fulham put to us, and a lot of clubs are putting in clauses where if they don't play a certain amount of games, you pay a hefty fee at the end.

"That's always a problem for us.

"But if another club come in they will always outbid us in the Championship."

Despite missing out on Woodrow's return, the Brewers look to be on the verge of a double loan signing.

Two loan deals have been agreed with other clubs, with Albion now waiting on final decisions from the players before everything can be sewn up.

"We have agreed two individual deals for loans," added Clough.

"That was last night (Wednesday), and then the players would have to be done by 12pm today (to be available for the Birmingham City game tomorrow).

"Sometimes players want a little bit of time to get their heads around it and so on, despite them being available for loan and agents coming to us saying, 'are you interested in this player?'

"So we say yes, then we get the deal done and then they say, 'we just need a little bit of time to think about it'.

"There's a chance of one (being done in time for Birmingham), but I'd say it's unlikely.

"It's not impossible, especially with loans. Permanents take a bit longer, but loans can be done - especially when we've agreed with the clubs."

Elsewhere, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder confirmed that there had been 'dialogue' between the club and Burton regarding John Brayford, who has been made available for transfer by the Blades.

Albion had previously made enquiries over the ex-Derby County man, who played a huge role in their survival last term, but Clough said that 'did not go anywhere'.

Asked back in July whether that meant a move for Brayford was probably off the cards for now, he said: "As far as we are concerned, for the moment, yes."
