Harry Campbell has become the first Burton Albion player of the summer to sign a new deal with the club.

The goalkeeper has put pen to paper on a one-year contract that will keep him at the Pirelli Stadium until June 2019, with an option for a further year included.

Campbell is yet to make his senior debut for Albion, having been behind Jon McLaughlin and Stephen Bywater in the pecking order since joining ahead of the Brewers' debut Championship campaign in 2016.

But Nigel Clough has previously stated that the former Bolton Wanderers man, who has been utilised primarily in reserve and Birmingham Senior Cup games over the past two seasons, is more likely to get first-team opportunities in 2018-19 as Albion prepare for a return to League One, the earlier rounds of the FA Cup and a Checkatrade Trophy campaign.

"We are very pleased that Harry is staying with us - he has improved over the last year and he works extremely well with Stephen Bywater and Martin Taylor (Albion goalkeeping coach)," said Clough.

"Our intention is to play him in some games next season, certainly the Checkatrade Trophy, and he has been very unlucky that Stephen hasn't had an injury or a suspension.

"He might not have had the time on the pitch, but we see the improvement behind the scenes every day in training.

"For his age, he's coming on very well. He has a brilliant attitude and it’s tough when you are a reserve goalkeeper.

"An outfield player knows he might be on at any minute but it's unlikely as a goalkeeper - but you still have to keep working every day and the impressive thing about him has been his attitude."

Campbell will now begin looking ahead to the 2018-19 campaign after becoming the first of Burton's six out-of-contract players to sign a new deal as they prepare for a season back in League One.

"It's good to get it over the line," he said.

"It has been a good two years here and I have enjoyed it. I have learnt a lot and worked with some brilliant people.

"It's a shame what happened last season, but we are looking to bounce straight back up."

Bywater - who started 44 of Albion's 46 League games last season - is currently on trial, charged with affray, which he denies.

Callum Hawkins and Jack Livesey are the Brewers' other goalkeeping options. Of that pair, one is expected to be out on loan at any one stage this season, with the other back with the Burton first-team squad to act as support for Bywater and Campbell.

While Campbell has now pledged his future to the Brewers, Tom Naylor, Damien McCrory, Jake Buxton, Hope Akpan and Lloyd Dyer are still yet to confirm their decisions over contract offers.
