Nigel Clough says he does expect a deal to be done that sees Jackson Irvine leave Burton Albion - but nothing is decided yet.

The Brewers boss has also confirmed that the club have bid for a midfielder and are still pursuing a couple of other targets as the end of the transfer window approaches.

Andy Garner confirmed on Saturday that Irvine has spoken to Hull City about a possible move to Albion's Championship rivals, with the Australian international absent from Burton's squad as they drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.

A deal is currently being discussed between Irvine and a club, according to Clough - but as the Brewers boss adds, Irvine is still a Burton Albion player.

"I think there's interest and there's a deal being discussed at the moment," he said in the immediate aftermath of the Brewers' draw with Wednesday.

"Nothing is concluded. It wasn't right to involve him today."

Asked if he expected the deal to be done, Clough added: "Yes we do, but you never know until it's actually signed.

"That's why we try not to release names when we are signing players.

"Until that name is on the contract and it's registered, we try not to talk about it.

"Until that is done, he is still our player."

Not that the potential departure of Irvine will have an effect on Burton's bid to bring more players into the club.

"We've made an offer for a player and we are chasing another couple as well," added Clough.

"Those targets haven't really changed.

"The only problem today with having no Matty Lund, injured, and Hope Akpan suspended and actually injured as well, we were a bit light.

"That's why we put Kyle McFadzean in there, just a little bit more height as well to deal with their threat.

"We were already looking for a midfielder anyway - we have bid for one.

"But if they are all fit, we are okay."
