A parade of floats will hail the start of one of the most popular events in the South Derbyshire calendar.

The 57 Overseal Gala promises more entertainment than ever, with numerous attractions and events, including a Spitfire fly-past, fairground rides, and Doctor Who themed characters as well as the hugely popular Top Dog competition.

The event will be held on Saturday, July 8, and begins with a parade of floats through the village, starting off at 1pm near Linton Heath and arriving on the field, in Woodville Road, around 2pm for the opening ceremony.

This will be followed by a selection of music, along with dancing and gymnastics displays in the main arena – located on the upper recreation ground this year.

There will also be additional entertainment in the village hall, and further attractions on the lower field.

Throughout the day there will be further events including a BBMF Spitfire flypast, Doctor Who themed characters including Daleks, children’s crafts, the hugely popular “Overseal’s Top Dog” dog show, Nottingham’s Boys & Girls Marching Band, JT Falcons Birds of Prey, local singer Marc John, a magician, fairground rides and competitions, along with charity stalls, arts and craft demonstrations, fancy dress competition, barbecue and a variety of refreshments.

Littered throughout the village will be this year’s scarecrow festival contestants.

Gala committee chairman Mandy Elton said: “The gala is the main event in Overseal, an opportunity for a village day out with a huge emphasis on fun and community. We welcome everybody from anywhere to come and share this special day with us, which helps us put on additional events in the village such as Bonfire Night and Overload music festival as well as support local community initiative.”

Overseal Gala takes place from 1pm on Saturday, July 8, at Overseal Recreation Ground, in Woodville Road.
Adult entry costs £1 and children are free.
