A popular Champagne that has boosted sales at Aldi has been named one of the best available.

Despite costing only £10.99 per bottle, Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut was labelled "outstanding" by judges at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, where it picked up a silver medal.

The Mirror reports the product has been credited with increasing Aldi's Champagne sales by an amazing 40 per cent in the past month alone, so it's clearly as popular with drinkers as it was with the judges in the competition.

Made by Philizot et Fils, the drink is described by Aldi as a nicely dry mix of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier with an aroma of “ripe apples and floral hints”.

The bottle has proved popular with Aldi shoppers

Aldi’s Julie Ashfield said: “We’re immensely proud. We work with some of the best winemakers.”

Aldi's wine expert Sam Caporn said: "In my honest opinion, the Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut is one of the very best, if not the best value champagne in the UK today.

"It is staggering quality for such a reasonably priced, tasty and sophisticated fizz."

In total, Aldi picked up 21 prizes, including another silver medal for its Cremant Du Jura sparkling wine, which is even cheaper than the champagne, at £7.99.
