Burton currently boasts two places that need 'urgent improvement' to their food hygiene, according to data from the Food Standards Agency.

The Middle Bell, in Barton-under-Needwood, was found to need major improvement to its food handling, cleanliness and management of food safety.

Janosik, a shop in Uxbridge Street, was found to need similar improvements but scored higher for its food handling methods.

These are the two places in the area that scored zero stars for their food hygiene rating.

Peter Kitchener, owner of The Middle Bell, said the issues raised in the report have been "taken very seriously" and he is "extremely disappointed" with the results of the inspection.

He told the Burton Mail: "I feel that it is not a fair representation of what is actually being delivered today and of the business overall. As a responsible operator we had already put a plan in place at the beginning of 2017 prior to any visit to address some of the concerns raised within the report and to strengthen our management team which included the appointment of a new head chef.

"Our new head chef Ben joined us on February 11 with the visit taking place on February13, so you can see from this his time with our business when we were inspected was limited."

How the restaurants are assessed

At an unannounced inspection, an environment officer from the council will check:

  • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
  • how the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future
