A group of spritely young teenagers from Burton are looking for donations as part of the final stage of their National Citizens Service programme.

Seven teams made up of 14 students across Burton and South Derbyshire enrolled on the four-week programme this summer in order to build their CVs and learn some valuable life skills.

Run by Burton Albion Community Trust, the programme aims to give 15-17-year-olds an unforgettable experience which builds confidence and independence.

Week one saw the young people working together and getting active as they stayed at a residential centre in Shrewsbury and took part in fun ice-breaking activities such as trapeze, raft-building and ultimate Frisbee.

On week two, the teens returned home and worked with a skills practitioner, gaining skills in particular areas while discovering more about the local community.

Week three was spent planning their final project, with the theme: "Giving back to the community".

"Team Fabio" have planned an organised bake sale in order to raise money towards building a sensory garden at Carden Bank Care Home, in Belvedere Road, Burton.

Speaking of her experience, Bethany Ford, 16, said: "As a team we’ve learnt so many independence skills. We’ve been in situations where we’ve been rejected and we’ve had to bounce back.

"We’ve done activities that push people's boundaries and we’ve made loads of friends and it’s been really, really good."

Team leader Alice Bushnell, 20, said: "When you’re older, your senses go a bit so it’s nice to give them something they can go and enjoy."

The sweet treats will be up for grabs at Burton Market Hall on Friday, August 25 from 9am to 3pm.
