Today is National Fish and Chip Day!

Sounds like the perfect day doesn't it?

Fish and chip lovers across the UK are coming together to celebrate the nation's favourite take-away dish.

The celebratory day was held for the first time last year to resounding success and this year it is planned to be even bigger.

Of course, not everyone heading to one of our many fryers will want to tuck into fish.

So to mark what has to be one of the tastiest days in the calendar we take a close look at some of the more, erm, unique items to go on sale in chip shops across the region.

Unusual things you can buy in our chip shops

  1. Battered Creme Eggs

Yes, really! The Calais Road Fish Bar, in Burton, sold battered Creme Eggs during the Easter period.

And the takings for them looked pretty tasty in the accounts book.

They cost £1 each and went down a storm.

Chip shop owner Andrew Charalambous said: "With Easter coming up, we thought battered Creme Eggs would be perfect - and they are."

  2. Love fritters!

    Who says romance is dead?

Well it's certainly not at Chris's Fish and Chips, in Barwell, Leicestershire.

In the run up to Valentine's Day, the shop started selling its very own love fritters so couples could show their love for each other in a in battered form.

The fritters were heart shaped and made from potato.

  3. Wet fish!

How about a DIY fish supper?

Award-winning chippy The Cod’s Scallops, in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, offers more than just battered fish.

The Tamworth Road restaurant and chippy takeaway has its own wet fish counter so customers can get the catch of the day to cook at home.

  4. Deep fried mince pies

Why not celebrate Christmas in style by buying a deep-fried mince pie from your local chippy?

A number of outlets including the Calais, in Burton, sold these to mark Christmas festivities.

But would you eat it with ice cream or mushy peas?

  5. Belgian-style chips!

A new chippy in Nottingham has got a more continental vibe than your traditional chip shop.

Specially made Belgian-style chips are at the forefront of Sauce 'Em which is located in Wheeler Gate.

There's also a choice of TWENTY sauces to go with the Belgian fries.

  6. Battered pigs in blankets

    Yes, they do exist!

Another deep-fried festive treat, battered pigs in blankets appeared in a number of chip shops over the festive period, including Bestwood Fisheries, in Nottinghamshire, and Leicester's The Fish and Chip.

Unlike traditional pigs in blankets – mini sausages wrapped in bacon – these are jumbo bangers, wrapped in smoked bacon and then fried in batter.

  7. Dutch chips

As well as Belgian chips, you can also get to taste Dutch chips.

There is a specialist Dutch chip shop in Leicester called Awesome Chips, found in the Haymarket Shopping Centre.

There are also plans for a Dutch-style chippy to open in Derby city centre.

  8. Halloumi wraps

Not the first thing you think of when making your trip down to the chippy but there is now a more healthy option at George's Tradition which has stores across the East Midlands.

As well as its traditional menu, it has items such as halloumi wraps and fish pakoras to suit its diverse customer base.

Halloumi is a type of cheese and has become a must-have food in certain parts of the country. You can even have halloumi fries at some places.

  9. Pretty much everything

    Can't decide what to get?

Well at the The Chip Inn, in Huthwaite, you can order the Mega Beast, which is pretty much everything you can think of in one.

For £20, diners will get two 10" pizzas, chips, cheese, doner kebab meat, chicken kebab meat, salad, onion rings and chicken nuggets - all artfully presented in a great big pizza box.
