"A Full English breakfast is what we grew up with! It is the one big treat that kids get on the weekend - it's good family time."

Those are the words of celebrity TV chef Gordon Ramsay.

And it would be hard to disagree with him - not that anyone would dare!

The same couldn't be said, unfortunately, for the weekly visit to one of the big supermarkets for a big food shop.

But how about combining the two - and treating yourself to a hearty fix of eggs, bacon, sausage and beans at the end?

That's what Leicestershire Live writer Becky Jones decided to do - and she has produced a short guide on what to expect on your plate at 5 of the big supermarket cafes.

And just for good measure, she's given them a rating out of 10 to see who serves up the best.

This is how she got on.

Best supermarket breakfast

  1. Morrisons

The supermarket's 'Big Breakfast' costs £4.70 and includes two British sausages, two rashers of British bacon, two hash browns, Heinz baked beans, mushrooms, tomato, fried egg and fried bread. You can also add toast and a fruit juice for £1.50.

The grumpy woman on the till didn't get things off to the best start, and the breakfast, though large, was quite a mixed bag.

The crispy bacon was good, the hash browns were decent, and the fried egg was nice and soft (though not as runny as I'd have liked). The beans tasted OK, despite being slopped onto the plate, but I didn't think much to the mushrooms, the fried bread - which was such a huge crust that it wasn't fried all the way through - or the sausages, which were poor quality.

Also, I seemed to be missing any tomato.

The breakfast wasn't great. But, on the upside, the cafe is a nice place to sit.

  2. Asda

Asda's nine piece breakfast costs £4.50 and includes two rashers of bacon, two pork sausages, one egg (choice of fried, scrambled or poached) one hash brown, tomato, beans and mushrooms.

The bacon was thick and tasty (though it would have been nicer a bit crispier) the hash brown was good and the fried egg was spot on.

The beans and tomato were decent and the sausage was ok - not the best, not the worst - but the mushrooms could have done with some extra cooking.

The cafe is nice and light and the staff were friendly.

  3. Tesco

Tesco's all day breakfast costs £4.30 and includes a sausage, two rashers of bacon, a fried egg, hash brown, beans, tomatoes and toast.

The bacon was nice and crispy, the egg was cooked just right, and the toast was good too.

The tomatoes and beans were decent, and the sausage was ok. The hash brown, though, was heavy rather than fluffy in the middle, and the outer was chewy.

The cafe is small but pleasant, and the staff were cheerful.

  4. Waitrose

The small breakfast at Waitrose costs £5.95 and includes a sausage, two rashers of bacon, tomatoes, a fried egg and a slice of toast.

To be honest, when this one arrived, I was a bit underwhelmed. I think it was the dish, which didn't look quite right with a cooked brekkie in it.

However, as soon as I got stuck in, I was won over. The bacon was nice and thick and slightly crispy, the sausage was deliciously meaty with no fatty bits, and the toast was made with quality bread.

The tomatoes were just right, still with a bit of bite, and the fried egg was nice - although I would have preferred it runny.

This is a bit smaller and pricer than the others, but it's a quality breakfast.

  5. Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's 'Big Breakfast' costs £4.25 and includes a fried egg, two sausages, two rashers of bacon, a hash brown, fresh tomato, baked beans and a slice of toast.

This breakfast looked great when it arrived, and the taste didn't disappoint.

The lightly herbed sausages (Lincolnshire, I think) were lovely, the fried egg was deliciously runny, and the toast was made with quality bread.

The tomato still had some bite to it, and the baked beans were good. The only slight criticism is that I would have liked the bacon a bit crispier.

This was a very good breakfast, and was just the right size for my appetite.

The cafe is big and bright, and the staff were cheery and helpful.
