This summer, people across Burton will flock to nearby airports to jet away for their annual holiday abroad. While most are looking forward to soaking up the summer sun, others will have the threat of terrorism on their minds, and want to know how best to stay safe on holiday.

The UK's own terror threat level still stands at severe following the Manchester Arena attack but which countries are the safest to visit this summer?

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advice, here's all you need to know about potential holiday destinations this year:

United States of America

The FCO states that terrorist attacks are likely to take place in the USA. Tourists should watch media reports and be vigilant at all times, reporting any suspicious activity they see.

Like most Western countries, the USA is pretty safe, however there are risks associated with firearm ownership and international terrorism, and the country has also witnessed a number of mass shootings in recent years.

Turkey

The FCO says a number of terrorist groups are active in Turkey, and since 2015 there has been an increase in PKK (Kurdish separatist) terrorist activity in the south-east. Those in Burton thinking of traveling to Antalya, a popular tourist destination in the country from East Midlands Airport should remain vigilant at all times.

These terrorist groups have publicly threatened to attack tourist sites in Turkey – with random attacks potentially affecting places visited by UK citizens.

Tunisia

The terror threat in Tunisia remains highly likely after 38 tourists were killed by an IS gunman as they sunbathed on a beach resort in Sousse in June 2015. The FCO advises against all non-essential travel to Tunisia.

France

France still remains one of the most popular destinations for tourists, with East Midlands Airport offering flights to the country regularly, despite enduring high profile terrorist attacks such as the shootings at Charlie Hebdo and attacks in Paris and Nice. The FCO wants tourists to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting France.

Egypt

Egypt attracts thousands of tourists a year, though the FCO advises those staying within the Red Sea coastal resorts of Sharm El Sheikh to stay within those areas and avoid traveling elsewhere.

Morocco

Around 600,000 British nationals visit Morocco every year and most visits are trouble-free. However the Foreign and Commonwealth Office say that there is a high risk of terrorism in Morocco which may target popular places with tourists such as hotels, bars and beaches.
