A group of so-called 'mystic' meerkats from Drayton Manor Theme Park are predicting that England will win their first World Cup match - their keepers claim.

The resident meerkats at the Staffordshire venue's zoo have been using their own football dribbling skills to come up with the prediction.

They chase a ball filled with mealworms into the net of the team they predict will win the match.

They have made their predictions for the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 14 with the host nation coming out victorious, say the meerkats!

They have also used their super powers to predict an England win in their opening game against Tunisia in Group G on Monday, June 18.

Chris Mitchell, head of zoo operations at Drayton Manor , said: "Our meerkats have a proven track record of making sporting predictions, so we thought we would get them involved again in this year's big tournament because they are so intuitive.

The meerkats predicted a win for England

"They really enjoy the animal enrichment we provide and this time, for a bit of added fun, we made special goals and a ball with mealworms to get them to dribble the ball into the winning team's net.

"If they get this right, we will continue to provide predictions - they could go on to be as famous as Paul the Octopus!"

The octopus, from a Sea Life centre in Germany, shot to fame during the 2010 World Cup when he successfully predicted the outcome of eight matches. He performed his trick by choosing a mussel from one of two boxes bearing the flags of competing nations.

After successfully predicting that Spain would win the competition, he became an instant hero in Spain and was even given honorary citizenship in the Spanish town of Carballino.

The Staffordshire theme park and zoo will be posting the meerkat's predictions for big games on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Let's hope the meerkats are right and will see England take home the trophy!
