A group of women from across Burton and South Derbyshire are finding new leases of life after joining a running club, learning to run for miles at a time.

The Washland Women Runners has been going for 19 years, and welcomes women from across the area who want to get involved in running, no matter what experience they have.

Penny Walker, 57, from Stretton, is on the committee of the club, and said: “You’re never too old to run. I started at 51, and I’m so glad I did.

"I’ve taken part in many marathons, and I came last in one of them – but it doesn’t matter. It’s still better than sitting on the sofa thinking about doing it!”

The group meets at the Workout Rooms, in Wetmore Road, Burton every Wednesday at 7.45pm. Anyone interested is urged to check out the group’s website.
