Driver has sporty Volkswagen Scirocco seized by police

A motorist has been shamed by police after he was caught driving his expensive car in South Derbyshire without insurance.

Derby Roads Policing unit caught up with the motorist in WIllington, snapping a photograph of his sporty Volkswagen Scirocco, prices of which start at £20,000 from new.

Adam Peaty claims second World Championships gold medal in Budapest

Adam Peaty claimed his second gold medal at the World Swimming Championships in Hungary this evening.

He won the 50m breaststroke final in 25.99, narrowly missing out on breaking the world record for the third time at this Championships.

That added to the gold he won in the men’s 100m breaststroke final on Monday in Budapest.

Slow traffic in Overseal tonight

If you’re heading through Overseal tonight on Burton Road, expect some delays.

The A444 Burton Road, in both directions at the B5004 Woodville Road and Lullington Road is seeing slow traffic due to temporary traffic lights and roadworks in the area.

ETHCS (Ethical Vegan Clothing Company) has shared a video of a man known only as “Tim” showing off his gymnastic skills on the newly restored bridge, but a member of the Friends of the Ferry Bridge which helped kick-start its restoration has branded the footage as being seen as a “selfish and irresponsible” and added it could lead to copycats.

Burton street blocked as 11-year-old boy is involved in collision with car

An 11-year-old boy has been involved in a crash with a car in Burton. The road where the accident happened was blocked for more than an hour.

Staffordshire Police and paramedics were called to Waterloo Street, at around 2pm today, Wednesday, July 26, to reports that a young pedestrian had been involved in a collision with a Peugeot 107 car.

Flights delayed at Birmingham airport due to ground handler’s sickness

Holiday makers have been left stranded at Birmingham Airport due to ground handling staff sickness.

Passengers have reported delays of more than an hour following the absence of ground handler staff.

The delay comes at the worse time for passengers as many look to travel on family vacation for the first week of the school summer holidays.

Swissport are contracted by airlines at Birmingham Airport to provide ground handlers

In a statement issued by Swissport they said, “Despite this effort, the Airport regrets to inform passengers travelling from Birmingham that they may suffer delays today as a result of Swissport’s staff absence.

“Birmingham Airport is doing everything in its power to support Swissport, and sincerely apologises for the impact this is having on passengers travelling through Birmingham”.

Between 20 and 30 staff have called in sick which accounts for more than a quarter of those expected.

Waterloo Street is blocked in both directions between Casey Lane and Albert Street due to an accident. The accident is not too far from the Burton Enterprise Centre and slow traffic is being reported.

A incident on the A50 has now been confirmed as a broken down lorry.

Accident on the A50 causing traffic problems

An accident has been reported on the A50 eastbound on the Little Chef roundabout.

One lane has been closed following the incident, and it is currently affecting traffic heading away from Blythe.

Man who died on the A50 is named

The man who died following a crash on the A50 in July 10 has been named as 39-year-old Midway resident Christopher Scott.

Mr Scott was driving a Renault when the vehicle collided with a barrier on the road at roughly 2.55pm on the eastbound carriageway of the A50 between junctions of the A6 to Derby and the A5132 to Swadlincote and Melbourne.

The inquest into his death began yesterday, as senior coroner Dr Robert Hunter said that the car overturned after the collision and ended up on the verge.

He went on to explain that Mr Scott, of Chesnut Avenue, Midway, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Manhole collapses and shuts Derby Road in Burton

Derby Road in Burton was closed for roughly 30 minutes on the evening of Tuesday, July 25 due to a manhole collapsing.

The road between B5018 Hawkins Lane, Princess Way and Wetmore Road Junction and the A511 Horninglow Road was shut by Staffordshire Police as they worked on a sunken hole in the road.

The road was closed in both directions for a short period of time before traffic information website, Inrix confirmed that the Derby Road had reopened.

An eye witness, Karl Jefferies, was close to the hole when it sank outside the Onestop shop. He took a picture as the police started to close the road and direct pedestrians away from the area.

The picture shows how far the road had sank, as a large hole appeared underneath.

Gas leak situation solved

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue has confirmed that the incident on Station Road in Woodville was resolved at around 10pm last night, July 25.

The 10-metre cordon surrounding a car that was leaking LPG gas has been lifted and firefighters from Swadlincote have left the scene.

Fire crews have thanked residents for their patience and understanding while the operation was carried out.

If you are heading through Derby on the A38 heading towards Burton there is currently slow traffic at Kingsway.

Motorist has car seized

Police in Derbyshire have seized a driver’s car after they failed to keep up with the monthly insurance payments. Officers from the Derby Roads Police unit stopped the driver in Willington and checks revealed the policy on this new looking Volkswagen Scirroco had been cancelled because the driver had not kept up with insurance payments - but was still driving around on the roads. However police said in their Tweet, “not any more”, as officers have seized the fancy motor.
