Thieves break into nine cars in seven days in South Derbyshire

Nine cars have been targeted by thieves in seven days in South Derbyshire as police issue a warning.

Since Friday, July 21, nine cars have been broken in to while parked-up overnight in areas including Melbourne, Kings Newton, Findern and Etwall.

Inspector Kate Bateman, who is in charge of policing for the area, said: “We have picked up on this recent spate of thefts from cars and are directing patrols in order to try and deter and catch those responsible.

There’s slow traffic around Burton on this evenings travel back from work, especially leaving Burton on the A38 at Clay Mills, where traffic is queuing up.

Those on the A5121 Wellington Road northbound, between A5189 Shobnall Road and B5017 Shobnall Road and A511 Horninglow Road may experience some slow traffic.

Elsewhere, traffic monitoring website Inrix has described St Peter’s Street northbound, as ‘very slow traffic’, between A5189 St Peter’s Bridge, Main Street and A511 Ashby Road.

Burglar is on the run from Sudbury prison in Derbyshire

A 27-year-old burglar has fled from an open prison in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire police are trying to trace Daniel Fenn-Dawkins who was jailed for aggravated burglary in June 2015 and was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison.

Officers who are trying to find the missing criminal are now appealing to the public for help in trying to locate him after he escaped from Sudbury open prison on May 26.

Hundreds of mourners have celebrated the life of a 14-year-old girl who died during a school art trip following a minibus crash.

The funeral of ballet dancer Holly Brown, from Branston, was held today, Thursday, July 27, at St James’ Church, in Barton under Needwood, followed by a wake at The Waterfront, at Barton Marina, with tributes being paid to the “passionate, dedicated and hard-working” teenager.

Holly, who attended John Taylor High School, in Barton under Needwood, with her twin sister, Emma, died on Friday, July 7, following a collision involving her school minibus and a council bin lorry on the A38 in Birmingham.

It might be worth holding back until later tonight, as the Met Office is predicting a 60 per-cent chance of rain between 5pm and 6pm.

Further rain is expected at around 8pm. But temperatures are expected to remain steady throughout the evening at around 15C and should be dry for most of the night.

Police brand Ferry Bridge freerunner's stunt a 'needless risk of life'

A Burton police chief has branded a stunt when a ‘freerunner’ performed daring acrobatic moves on Burton’s historic Ferry Bridge a “needless risk of life”.

Chief Inspector Rob Neeson spoke out after the Burton Mail published footage filmed for ETHCS ethical clothing company which features Tim Shieff, a professional English freerunner, showing off his impressive gymnastic skills on the recently restored Ferry Bridge.

Police have issued an appeal in the hunt for a mugger who pushed a young girl to the ground and stole a small amount of change in a terrifying ordeal

Searching missing Derbyshire girl

Police have appealed for help in finding a missing 13-year-old girl from Derbyshire. Vanesa Magyarova was last seen at on Monday, July 24, at 6pm, said a Derbyshire police spokesman. Her family understood that she was staying with friends but she has not yet returned home.

Rush hour roadworks headache for Overseal commuters

Roadworks in Overseal are causing a headache for rush hour motorists today.

Western Power Distribution is continuing its work along the A444 through Overseal as part of a plan to repair underground cables. The roadworks are on the A444 at the junction of Woodville Road and Lullington Road. They are set to last until October. However, it is understood the work will be completed sooner.

Broken down vehicle is removed

A broken down lorry has now been removed from A610 near Ambergate in Derbyshire. The truck had broken down in the middle of the road just outside Ambergate. Both lanes were closed at 6.20am and by 7.35am one side of the road had opened and traffic is moving again.
