Swadlincote homeowner flees in terror after serial criminal used violence to get inside his house

A serial shoplifter who was part of a group who caused a huge surge in crime in Swadlincote has been jailed again - this time for breaking into a house causing the occupant to flee in terror.

Christopher Knight held a knife as he forced his way into the home in Stanhope Road, while its owners were inside, causing them to flee in fear. He was caught after the householder recognised him.

Princess Anne visits Burton to open Palletforce SuperHub and goes to the National Memorial Arboretum

A Royal princess has made her way to East Staffordshire to officially open a new £50 million SuperHub and unveil a memorial dedicated to those who died or suffered as a result of war.

Princess Anne had a busy day in the area as she first headed to Palletforce to open the state-of-the-art SuperHub, which is expected to create 70 new jobs in Burton, before heading to the National Memorial Arboretum, in Alrewas.

Broken down lorry causing delays on the M1 northbound

There are long delays on the M1 northbound this afternoon, after a lorry broke down on the Leicestershire road.

The delays are between junction 24A, for Derby, Stoke and East Midlands Airport and junction 25 for Brian Clough way.

Traffic monitoring website Inrix has confirmed that a travel time of around 60 minutes should be expected, as one lane is closed of three, causing long delays and queuing traffic.

East Midlands Trains is looking for new drivers and offering a £35k salary

A train provider operating in Burton is looking for drivers who could take home more than £35,000 a year.

East Midlands Trains is looking to take on trainee drivers to work at its depots at Etches Park, in Derby, and Eastcroft, in Nottingham, in 2018.

The weather in and around Burton and South Derbyshire today

Any early rain will clear the south of the region, leaving spells of sunshine for all through the rest of the day. It will be windy though, feeling rather cool too.

This evening the cloud will melt away tonight, allowing lengthy clear spells overnight. The winds will ease too, resulting in a chilly night for some.

There's no reason to stay in this summer with so many fun-filled places across Burton and South Derbyshire
