Woodville bodybuilder Sadie Jones crowned in national competition

A 28-year-old bodybuilder admits she “welled up” after beating tough competition to be crowned the winner of a national contest.

Sadie Jones, of Swadlincote Road, Woodville, swept the board of the competition by coming first in the bikini category and second in the female model round in the UK Ultimate Physique (UKUP) contest, which took place in the Beck Theatre in Hayes, west London.

Man accused of planning a terror attack tells court he thought it was OK to download bomb-making instructions from the web

A Burton factory worker who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack with his girlfriend thought he was allowed to download bomb-making instructions because he found them on Facebook and Youtube, he told police.

Munir Mohammed, who packed ready meals at Burton’s Kerry Foods factory, told officers that he viewed the instructions, which showed how to make a detonator circuit, out of “curiosity” and was not planning an attack.

Russell Brand's book signing in Burton put back a week but get it in the diary

Comedian and Hollywood star Russell Brand has changed the day he is coming to Burton - but don’t panic as it is only a week later.

The actor, presenter and author was originally due to sign copies of his latest book, Recovery - Freedom From Our Addictions, on Tuesday, November 14, but this has been put back a week due to his busy work schedule.

Inquest opened into the death of an Etwall man found dead on the A50

An Etwall man was discovered dead underneath a bridge crossing the A50, an inquest has heard as it was adjourned for a full police investigation into the matter.

Jamie Michael Beeston was found at Toyota Island with fatal injuries on October 30, the Derby inquest was told.

The 33-year-old’s body was discovered on the A50 westbound carriageway underneath a bridge supporting a roundabout over the road.

Detectives say they are no closer to catching would-be thieves who smashed their way into a supermarket in Ashby last week.

In the early hours of the morning on Friday, November 3, Aldi, in Dents Road, became the latest store to be targeted in a spate of similar incidents across the area.

Fund-raisers in Swadlincote urged to 'keep dancing' in Strictly Come Dancing-style competition

The final sequins are being prepared for a charity TV Strictly Come Dancing-style competition taking place in Swadlincote later this week.

The Strictly Relay for Life will entertain audiences at Gresley Old Hall, in Church Gresley, on Friday, November 10, for a night of dancing, laughs and a lot of fun.

Heartbreaking story as mum-of-four dies alone and cold because she couldn't afford to put the heating on

It’s more than 50 years since the play Cathy Come Home was broadcast on TV. However, the issues highlighted within the hard-hitting and heartbreaking programme are as real today as they were in the 1960s.

This week it has been reported that Elaine Morrall, a mum-of-four, died because she couldn’t afford to put the heating on her family have claimed, as her Universal Credit benefits were stopped because she was too ill to attend a meeting.

Man charged with manslaughter over the death of Burton YMCA volunteer

A Stretton man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a former YMCA volunteer.

Martin Hayday, 42, of Main Street, in the village, has been charged with the manslaughter of Francis Lovelock, police have confirmed.

Who will be in the jungle this year?

It’s one of the country’s best-loved reality shows and it’s back for a 17th series with hosts Ant and Dec making a return.

The show has links with Burton as back in 2104 former South Derbyshire MP Edwina Currie was a contestant on the show and World Superbikes champion Carl ‘Foggy’ Fogarty, who used to run his company Foggy Petronas from South Derbyshire, was crowned King of the Jungle.

Warmer conditions expected for today

It’s expected to be a slightly warmer day today, Thursday, November 9, as temperatures reach the mid-teens in the afternoon.

Don’t pack away your umbrella just yet as there will be some patchy light rain in the morning, but this will clear towards midday leaving for a dry and bright afternoon with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures are expected to reach 14C.

Two Burton and South Derbyshire care homes 'need improvement' health watchdog reports say

Residents at Castle Court Care Home in Castle Gresley were left at risk of harm because of a lack of staff to meet their needs, a critical inspectors’ report revealed.

A report by the independent regulator Care Quality Commission said staff at the home “did not always recognise some incidents as potentially harmful situations.”
